Fat Body Positivity Challenge Interview with Sonia Tremblay, #WeFatGirlsWill
Being constantly challenged in the world of body positivity with harassment of creepy DM’s and hateful comments or vulgar disrespect to our communities members; Sonia Tremblay has created a new hashtag to help us come together. I was contacted by her on Instagram about her new hashtag and I quickly responded with asking if she would be up for an interview. I found this new hashtag to be something that will be incredible for a community building symbol. So, of course, I would want her to be interviewed immediately! In the end she said yes and we began.
I asked her six questions. Ones I am sure you were thinking as well when you read the hashtag in the blog post title. She answered them quiet amazingly, if, I may add. Sonia also asked me to mention that english is not her first language (she’s a brilliant french speaking girl from Canada.) but, gave me the thumbs up to help her grammar out if need be. Not that mine is to spectacular itself. Now getting started let’s ask the top question on everybody’s mind.
1.) What is #WeFatGirlsWill exactly?
“I created this hashtag so that girls who do not meet the standards of beauty (or so society say) can express themselves. To represent all that society does not expect to see from fat girls. I want everyone to say loud and clear what we do and will do every day to be a part of culture and society. For example… #WeFatGirlsWill wear crop tops all summer. #WeFatGirlsWill kiss our lover in public. #WeFatGirlsWill never accept less than we deserve. #WeFatGirlsWill eat a burger with no shame in our game ! hahaha !” – Sonia Tremblay
Can we get a round of applause for Sonia?!? Isn’t this woman a total bad arse, right? I didn’t start wearing crop tops until the past two summers. I was ashamed of my body, mainly because I was taught to feel ashamed of it. But then I found the body positivity community and started living out loud. Much like this hashtag says we can all do, even as fat girls.
2.) How did you come up with the hashtag #WeFatGirlsWill?
“When you spend your day talking about empowerment and body positivity, it is sometimes hard to stay hopeful. You get more aware of all the things that are not okay. There is a lot of body shaming in the media. Girls are bombarded every day with diet culture, fat shaming, etc. I was looking for something that would give us our power back. Something that would send the message that we exist and that we have the right to be happy and accepted just as we are. I always believed in team work. And this is exactly what this hashtag represent for me : TEAM WORK !” – Sonia Tremblay
3.) Why do you think #WeFatGirlsWill will make an impact in the BOPO Community?
“I don’t know what impact it will have. But I hope it will give some hope to all the girls feeling alone. I want the BOPO community to grow stronger. And the #WeFatGirlsWill is a way for me to say : We are all together is this. Let’s speak out ! I think it is an empowering hashtag and that’s why I chose it. Also, it could be used in so many different ways that it can suit every girl. We all have certain things that we are less comfortable with… In fashion, in sexuality, in life in general… So every one of us can have an empowering #WeFatGirlsWill
moment.” – Sonia Tremblay
4.) How long has the #WeFatGirlsWill been around and how long have you been planning on creating it?
“I started it a few days ago. It had never been used before on Instagram so it is really ours ! But I feel like it can be around for a long time because there is still so many walls to knock down. I was looking for an empowering hashtag for quite sometimes… And it just hit me ! All we need to do is to speak our truth ! What will we do that is normal behavior for everybody else but is always a struggle for us ? What will we do to take space, to get the same respect than anybody else ?” – Sonia Tremblay
5.) What plans do you have in the future for #WeFatGirlsWill?
“I want it to spread all over Instagram. In hopes it could get the attention of the media so people can be aware of all the stigmas that still exist in our society. I want it to reach girls that don’t even use Instagram so they know that they are not alone. But most of all, I want it to help girls gets confidence. I would love to see brands use it. Like a lingerie ad by example. With girls from all shapes on it. And our hashtag at the bottom.#WeFatGirlsWill wear whatever makes us feel sexy ! And I hope that people will really understand the meaning of it. It is now time to act ! For years we have been body shamed by the media, and #WeFatGirlsWill not take it anymore !” – Sonia Tremblay
6.) Do you have any words of wisdom coming from #WeFatGirlsWill for our audience in the BOPO Community?
“We are stronger than we think and the revolution has already started. Even if there is still big steps to be made, I see everyday how the mentality is changing. And we all should have hope! People will talk anyway. People will judge anyway. So why not live our best lives ?#WeFatGirlsWill change the world !!!!!” – Sonia Tremblay
